Sadly cancer affects far more; everyone, if they don't die of other causes, will eventually suffer cancer and, for this reason there are charities trying to cure cancer (rather than just treat it). There is no reason as far as I am concerned that the government could not put savings it makes in the NHS towards giving funds to Cancer Research UK. I wish your mum well and good luck.
