The Conservatives need to modernise.
But in an attempt to distance itself from the old-school the party is talking in a non-engaging way. There must be some statements of intent as follows:
- We are not homophobic - Section 28 was a mistake, an unforgiveable mistake, and we believe in “Live and let live”
- We are not racist - We do not believe in positive discrimination, we are colour-blind
- We are not sexist - We believe in meritocracy
- We are democratic - The poll tax was a mistake and the next time public opinion is against something for what, on the face of it, looks like a great reason - namely fairness - we will listen
- We positively support individual freedom - We will not return to an environment of censorship and state-control of society
- We care about society’s more vulnerable - We will not tolerate lawlessness and crime but we know that capitalism doesn’t protect society’s most weak on its own and we will ensure FAIR treatment of all by the government
- We want small government - Government should tax to provide services, it should not have any other purpose other than to provide infrastructure and build a nation that people can strive within
The public’s perception of the Conservative Party is that we have policies that are as good as the Labour Party, but nastier and less considerate of others. This is clearly not the case - we are protectors of fairness, civil liberties, capitalism and meritocracy.
Walter Wolfgang’s treatment (link1, link2) should be a wake-up call for the electorate. The misuse of anti-terrorism powers, along with the government’s anti-thought and incitement to religious hatred laws are an afront to personal liberty and, as the party of opposition, the public should be hearing in no uncertain terms what all Tories think of this.
