I’m proud to be included on the Once More’s first weekly round-up of Tory bloggers click here for others.
Devils’s Kitchen has an excellent post about the irrelevance of calling people left-wing or right-wing.
I have previously commented on this irrelevance. For some reason governments tend to impose on the people more and more as they’re in power longer. Thatcher banned ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools (I continue to contend that you cannot ‘promote’ a sexuality so while the law shouldn’t have had any affect is clearly did and gave the wrong impression that somehow homosexuals could not or should not be part of society), banned films from adult consumption and imposed the poll tax against the majority opinion. Blair is banning people from criticising religions and, even worse, his political party (Walter Wolfgang).
Unfortunately, and to the detriment of all of us, Blair is going far further than any previous leader as Devil’s Kitchen explains in detail. I recommend you read it.
I hope this government falls but I hope that something doesn’t have to go majorly wrong for this to happen. There is a risk that Iran, North Korea, Pensions or Council Tax could all go horribly wrong and bring down this government - I hope people come to their senses in time.
The fate of the Zimbabwean asylum seeker is a troubling one. As far as I am concerned the fact that he lied in his application should have scuppered any considerations given to that application. Why should we be willing to offer very generous assistance to someone who has already proven disrespect for due process?
Asylum is something that a humane country should offer, but at the same time we shouldn’t be biting off our noses to spite our faces. If an asylum seeker, refugee or, indeed, immigrant commits a crime I see no reason why we should continue to tolerate their presence. Admittedly under current legislation the judge had no choice but to rule the way he did, but this should be the catalyst for ensuring that a law is passed to correct this wrong.
England must not accept asylum seekers who do not accept that England is a nation with laws that are followed, typically, to the letter by its people. The English are famous throughout the world, with the Japanese, for following rules - this cannot and should not be undone or eroded by immigration and this is the best way to do that. In this way everyone is in control of their destiny - if they like living in their new homeland then they can quite easily avoid committing crimes.
