Lucy, Coeliac disease is a genetic disease and there's no safe way of consuming gluten at the moment. If you are approached by anyone offering any of these treatments do some basic research or contact CoeliacUK: http://www.coeliac.org.uk

It appears you have been scammed.

Sadly, the consumption of gluten in anything greater than Codex Alimentarius quantities will damage your intestine whether you react negatively or not.

Hello

I have been a coeliac for 5 years now and recently felt that I was building a tolerance as previously I would react violently and be in a lot of pain where as I still had the reactions but no pain.
I was persuaded to try a remedy that diluted gluten down to 1000th of it's original form and was advised to take two drops in the morning and two at night then have a rest week, then do it again, rest a week and then I would be "cured".
I was so ill in the first week I did not take it again and now 6 weeks on I am still highly reactive to all things I am eating and I am very concerned I have done some damage.
Have you ever heard of this before? Do you have any suggestions? The so called "doctor" has not even been in contact to discuss my symtoms so I fear it may have been a fraud all he keeps saying is that this has never happened before...

Yes to both.

Rice Krispies do contain gluten but it is considered an acceptable amount by the agreement made between Coeliac Societies of Europe called Codex Alimentarius.

The only trouble with butter is if people in your house get crumbs in it!

Coeliacs may like to know about the CAMRA gluten free beer festival held in Chesterfield in February 2006.

Tasting notes on the beers can be found here:

Gav, the wafers used in Mass must be bread-like in the sense that they contain some gluten.

I understand there are now wafers that are acceptable to the Catholic Church because they contain gluten but they are so very low in gluten that coeliacs do not react to them.

Please see page 328 of 2006 Coeliac UK gluten free food & drink Directory (safe list) for suppliers of Communion wafers.

Hornblower - Okay I did not know that... That changes a lot of my concerns about trying to avoid genetic diseases.

John - I think you know my thoughts on religion generally but I cannot say I am surprised. Catholicism, while I'm sure it is comforting to some people, tells people that a piece of rubber that avoids pregnancy is evil - even if that stops a child from being born into an abusive home. Does this piece suggest that Catholics believe wheat is necessary for the body of Christ to be present (anyone who genuinely knows, I really would like to be enlightened on this)?

Hi & thanks for your comment on my post re. breastfeeding protecting against coeliac disease. As I understand it genes can turn on & off for reasons which are still mysterious to us. What some researchers speculate is that there are triggers that cause a certain gene to be active - so just because there's a genetic component doesn't mean that the disease may not be affected by dietary or environmental factors too.
