No EU Superstate
Edward McMillan-Scott has written an open letter, it appears, to bloggers who support withdrawal from the EPP.
The Conservative Party ought to be the natural party of euroscepticism. The Referendum Party and then UKIP came into existence because of this odd position on the EU.
Arguments about influence, about freedom within the EPP-ED group and about euroscepticism miss the key point. The Conservatives lost votes to UKIP in the EU elections because they support an institution that the majority of English people, rightly, do not support. A recent report shows that those who understand the EU’s institutions etc. are more eurosceptic than those who don’t. Cameron, one must assume, will have an understanding of the EU’s structures and, by implication, will be against this socialist, controlling and non-democratic supranational organisation.
Of course, I am in favour of withdrawal but while that’s not on the cards at the moment. The minimum the Tories should be doing is withdrawing from a political group which considers the EU to be a superstate in the making.
