I actually think Hughes' politics would have less influence on the Lib Dems popularity than his charisma. Charles Kennedy may have been seen as the nice chap, but no thinker took him seriously and would have been seriously concerned about allowing him to run the British economy/government. Hughes is different: he can carry an audience and he sounds reasonable even when he's suggesting banning cars from London...

And all that I have just said is not &lt;em&gt;because&lt;/em&gt; of your second paragraph, honestly!</description>

Looks like it's mainly Conservative supporters that are out for Hughes' blood, which is strange because you'd think that they would prefer the more left-wing candidate - one that would challenge Labour and possibly cause defections to Cameron's Tories.</description>
