I mean life in prison.

"Until they rot in jail" has never really made much sense to me. What a waste of time waiting for them to rot. But certainly until they die, yes.

And frankly I would struggle to look anyone in the eye who thought that was harsh.

Do you mean life in prison, as in actually until they die, or just those pretend life sentences we get now that are only about 20 years?

Even for a first offence?

The mainstream liberal consensus would be horrified by that, wouldn't they?

Money has nothing to do with protecting a child from (and this isn't too strong) having their life ruined.

Paedophiles cannot be cured -- not by chemical or actual castration (as was tried in the US) or by counselling or any other means.

The only solution is life in prison. I don't think there's any ambiguity.

Of course, what Cameron's policy on this is, is another matter...

OT: Gav, I'd like to know what you and the Conservative party think about this.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4924686.stm

"A known paedophile who admitted repeatedly raping a nine-year-old girl despite being on probation has been jailed indefinitely."

"he must serve a minimum of five years and seven months."

5 years... for raping a child, I would call that a let off.
If it was upto me I'd jail him for 30 years, so he was an old man by the time he came out, but even if I wanted to give him a light sentence I'd say at 'least' 12 years.. 5 years just isn't a very long time at all.

And whats with him being on probation...

"Dangerous criminals released on probation will face tougher supervision to prevent them re-offending, under new measures announced by the government.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke has proposed restrictive orders similar to those applied to sex offenders."

Yeah like that works!

My question is, why can't we just put these nuts in JAIL? I don't think all criminals should get a long sentence, petty thief for example, people can change. But violent thugs, child rapists, these people should not be on the streets!

On skynews it says holding someone in jail cost £24,000 per year, but keeping them in the community on probation cost only £2,500.
Well £24,000 sounds like a bargin to me compared with the amount of damage these people can cause.
