The impact of the oil-folly in Iraq is still expanding. North Korea’s nuclear test is a clear sign to the rest of the world that the UN is impotent and that the US has made pre-emptive miltary action a non-option.

I think the danger that North Korea represents predates by many years the Iraq situation post-2003. When you look at a map and see just how close Seoul is to the DMZ, not to mention how close Japan is (and has already had test-missiles fired over it into the Pacific by North Korea some time ago), then I think that North Korea represents a whole different order of anxiety than Iraq. Pre-emptive action against North Korea hasn’t been practicable in any meaningful sense for a LONG time for these reasons. Not everything that goes on in the world has its roots in oil or with whatever errors the US/UK may have made in Iraq. The recent rapprochement between China and Japan, despite the former’s views about the latter’s role in the world and its own history) is a clear indication of just how seriously THEY take what their neighbour and erstwhile ‘ally’ is doing.
