NHS – best of British

[Cameron] held up the NHS as a “best of British” institution: “created by a Welshman and benefiting from the skills of doctors trained in the great medical schools of Scotland.”

… and financed by the poor of England to the benefit of the poor and wealthy of Scotland.

I hope you didn’t think I was blaming Scotland or the Scottish for the problems caused by the Scottish Parliament. The British government is the cause. The British politicians are aware of the intellectual arguments but are happy to rule England without a democratic mandate using the casting vote of MPs representing Scottish constituencies.

My rather flippant comment about the poor of England and the poor of Scotland is entirely justified. Government spending on Councils in England and on a per-head basis in many different policy areas is higher where there is democratic accountability (e.g. in Scotland and Northern Ireland) than where there is none or less (Wales and England). While this may be justified in such areas as infrastructure where the relatively sparse population requires a greater cost per head for roads to link towns and cities, it is not justified in the NHS where central hospitals that are a good distance from the people who need them are not rare in England.

The EU is our shared enemy, but since devolution, the British government has moved from being the enemy of Scotland and the unwitting ally of England, to being relatively unimportant to Scotland and being the witting enemy of England.
