Canvassing in Crawley (Ifield)
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on April 29th, 2006
Tim Loughton (MP for Shoreham and East Worthing) and I were canvassing this afternoon for John Denman. We did a few roads in Ifield and I have to admit I was surprised by the reactions on the doorsteps.
In the River Mead and Strathmore Road area people were either very guarded or only mildly positive. There weren’t a large number of negative responses, but there should, by stereotypes, have been many more positive.
Having completed this area, we moved down (south-west) to the Fairway area. Here there were an alarming number of BNP supporters. Most people, though, said they wouldn’t vote.
I was also out, earlier this afternoon, in Lancing — thank you for your warm welcomes if you’re reading here!

UKIP Gains

Rustington West had a by-election yesterday and the votes came in as follows:
| Party | 2006 By-election | 2003 (AJD’s Figures) |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | 44% | 53% |
| Liberal Democrats | 33% | 35% |
| UKIP | 15% | 7.7% |
| Labour | 6% | 4% |
The reason for posting this is the results for UKIP. People don’t, I am sure, prefer UKIP in any sense except that they have a more reasonable position on the EU. When will my party start listening?
Update: Using Daily Propaganda’s figures, I’ve added a column for 2003′s results.

No Election in Buckingham Ward
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on April 4th, 2006
I have just been advised that there will be no candidate standing against me in the elections in May and that I will, from May 4th, be a District Councillor for the Buckingham Ward in Adur District Council.
Election 2006

I am genuinely touched by your comments of support, not least from a non-Conservative supporter!
I had another great evening of canvassing tonight, with an excellent support rate. Cameron obviously deserves some of the credit, but I have been told twice now that the person in the home would normally vote for another party but that Adur Council has done exactly what it promised, and they’ll be voting the Conservatives in again!
I told you all last year how much I enjoy canvassing — I get home feeling all alive — but it’s better still this year as the number of friendly faces is so much higher!
And the issues on the doorstep are satisfyingly varied. Suffice to say there’s plenty of improvement to make, even if that is only in the eyes of a small number.
Canvassing has started

I have now started canvassing the Buckingham Ward. This will cause a slight reduction in posts – apologies!
If I, or any other canvasser, knocks on your door, please be nice! We’re doing it for something we believe in (and for free) and we are told by large numbers of people that they appreciate seeing a face even if it is only near election time!
Remember, whether I’m elected or not, you can get hold of me through this site, by e-mail (see about me on the right) or by telephoning the number on my canvass card. I also frequent the http://www.shorehambysea.com forum.
