Is this racist?
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on March 26th, 2009
Speaking live on air on Tuesday, Sir David said: “What do you call a Pakistani cloakroom attendant?”
After a pause, he said: “Mahatma coat.”
From the BBC.
It’s a play on the word “Mahatma” which is from Sanskrit meaning “great soul” and personally I would associate Sanskrit more with the rest of the subcontinent where Hinduism is the primary religion. But this is a joke that I would consider normal conversation among my relatively ‘diverse’ (to use an unpleasant doublespeak word) peer group — why are the rules different on the radio?
Surely a racist joke should be in some way critical of the other culture or racial group?
T-Shirt Hell not closing…

Offensive material: The site linked to below is definitely for mature people only.
So T-Shirt Hell is not, afterall, closing down.
They pretended they were and then, when the day of closure came, they weren’t. I know at least two people (including myself) who made panic-purchases and so you can see why they did it. Bugger
If you buy a shirt using one of these links I will get a commission:

Commandments on QI
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on February 3rd, 2009
Stephen Fry: “… Now, how many commandments are there?”
Jimmy Carr: “Are we talking about the commandments that God dictated to Moses on Mount Sinai?”
Stephen Fry: “Yes”
Jimmy Carr: “None. Literally, none; it never happened.”
Stephen Fry: “I’d go along with that. How many are there in the bible…”
Watch the whole episode on BBC iPlayer (UK only).

“What sort of idiot would say things like that knowing it would be broadcast”
It was a nice way to start (link works in the UK only), as was his apology, unnecessary as it was — seriously, if you doubt that statement, listen via YouTube (Warning: Daily Mail readers may find this offensive):

Familiar parking tale
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on January 13th, 2009
There was an uproar Monday when trucks towed nine vehicles and issued tickets to others parked in a bus lane on a street motorists said they’ve been parking on since a transit strike shut down bus service a month ago.
Typical!
Sky and pictures

Spot Sky’s deliberate mistake in the image on this article.
(There’s no live rail).
If this picture is updated, don’t worry, I’ve a screenshot which I’ll upload later!
Heathrow nutter protests
Posted by: Gav in Gavin Ayling's blog on August 15th, 2007
There are plenty of do-gooder tree huggers at Heathrow peacefully protesting. One told me that he tried to fly in from Glasgow but couldn’t get a flight. “We need a new runway at Heathrow really” he told me.
